You find bikers, walkers, roller skaters, and joggers sharing in total harmony a relatively narrow path that runs along the entire West River Drive. Inatteso Café is visible from the bike path with an attractive façade, large windows, and pristine outer sitting area. It is located in the financial district just off the West Side Highway in the Battery Park area. Inatteso means unexpected in Italian. This was our own feeling after we had their Cinnamon Swirl Muffins. Susan and Donna are the baker-owners. They combined a famous recipe by Maida Heatter with their own, to produce the very best muffin we have ever had $2,75. If you want to try the muffins, call them to make sure they are available for you. They run out of them quite fast. They also sell Croissant, Panini and baked breads from Sullivan Street Bakery, salads and other savory dishes. Their breakfast and lunch menu includes fresh squeezed orange juice, Strata and the best potato tart I have ever had as well. The Cinnamon Swirl muffins and the Potato Tart make two big hits in one small restaurant, totally unexpected. They have been opened for a couple of years and their clientele is faithful and growing. Inatteso Cafe’s prices are very fair. We returned three times in one week, just to combine exercise with a healthy breakfast, a perfect way to start the day in New York.
