Charlie’s Choices: My New Discoveries for 2009 Charlie Arturaola, sommelier in residence at the College of Hospitality Management at Boca Raton’s Lynn University, says the following wines—from all over the world—offer a great value-price ratio. “Most of them won’t break your wallet,” Arturaola says. “Look for good values in Rioja these days”
1. 2008 Pecorino ,Colli dei Venti, Terre di Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy A Roman grape with so much history from the south of the Abruzzo region. Full of aromas, a bit of green peas, mango, carambola nose, balance acidity, a tremendous mouth feel gentle acidity, well balanced. A new version from an ancient grape I highly recommend this for its value!! Pecorino dei Venti is the optimus pairing for white meats and fine cheeses $18 (Crown Liquors, 16850 Jog Road, Delray Beach, 561/921-9463)
2. 2007 Torrontes, Reserva El Origen, Cafayate , Salta Argentina . My second review of Torrontes but this time reserve , this wine brings the best of Cafayate Valley, good acidity, dry apricots, orange peel delicate nose and refine length .Is the cat me out of the Whites from northern Argentina. Price is unbelievable $11.99 for a white wine! Yes! What a bargain!!
(1328 Alton Road Miami Beach Florida – 305 673- 8282)
3. 2006 Pinot Noir, Woollaston Nelson New Zealand. By far one of the best Pinots I ever taste from Nelson wine region. Full of life, color, dry on nose with hints of all spice, Indian herbs, in the mid palate alcohol, tannin and textures blends perfectly with berry cherry aromas , very earthy with round elegance and terroir driven. Organic wine that will take your socks away!! Will Retail for $ 22 ( This wine just landed in South Florida, RNDC ) ask your favorite wine shop or just go to A1A Fine Wines, 6231 PGA Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens, 561/721-2220
4. 2007 Rosso di Montalcino Tenuta Silvio Nardi, Tuscany DOC . An historical family, The Mardi a symbol of quality (great Brunellos) . In this Rosso you’ll find the terroir on the mid palate, dry , earthy, leather. Spice notes, with dark cherry falvors with layers vainilla and minerality tones, polished tannins, textured and superb lengtht and finesse on the finish. This excellent vintage will make you forget for once the expensive Brunellos, a wine with a pedigree! Sells for $ 21.
(ask Lantana Liquors, 300 W. Mango St., Lantana, 561/533-1627)
5. 2005 El Coto de Imaz, Reserva, Rioja Spain. I love this wine for its tipicity. A wine that represents the terroir where its made. When Tempranillo makes the job, the marriage of American oak barrels makes the rest. Rioja knows how to vinify with American oak barrels as no other wine region. Deep ruby color, dry, alcohol, vanilla spice and dark fruit pronounced on the nose, layers of cherries and berries marmalade flavors, with a good tannin textures, balanced with oak well orchestrated with the length, character and good personality on the palate. Drink Rioja , even that Rioja never went away, its new campaign will spread around South Florida soon!! Look for our piece in MSN Latino soon. Sell for $20 (Crown Liquors, 16850 Jog Road, Delray Beach, 561/921-9463)
